EQUICITY MISSION

The aim of the Equi-City project, funded by the European Union, is to promote inclusive and sustainable growth of Indian cities through collaborative multi-stakeholder approach using participatory governance between local authorities and stakeholders, to ensure equitable provision of municipal Services, to promote diversity within and capacity development of local government organisations.

Objectives

  • To establish participatory forums where stakeholders and LAs can engage in collaborative solutions and coordinated action for equitable delivery of municipal services
  • To collaboratively build up technical capacity of LA officials so as to equip them to be leaders and be responsive to urgent priorities of especially urban poor
  • To sensitise LA officials and to advocate and implement diversity and equality frameworks in the organisations managed by LAs
  • To develop and implement tools that will enable citizens and LAs to collaboratively monitor and evaluate municipal services delivery
  • To communicate and sensitise officials, citizens and poor urban dwellers on the various initiatives and issues in the LA so to promote accountability and transparency in operations while providing incentives for action.

Launch Of New Vision

Nagpur : India’s first Equicity

In India, Nagpur city has been chosen as the first project city under the Equi-City project. Realizing the growing importance of urban local governance throughparticipatory processes in India, AllIndia Institute of Local Self Government(AIILSG) along with the NagpurMunicipal Corporation (NMC) andother partners is implementing Equi-City project funded by the EuropeanUnion (EU) in the city of Nagpur. Nagpur has been identified as one among the best cities in India in terms of liveability, greenery, public transport, and health care etc. It is also famously known as the "Orange City" as the is a major trade centre of oranges cultivated in the region.

About Nagpur

Nagpur is the second capital and the third largest city of the state of Maharashtra

after Mumbai and Pune with a spatial spread over an area of 257 sq. km and a population of 2.4 million (Census 2011). It is the 13th largest urban agglomeration in India and the largest city in Vidarbha Region. The city is administered by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. Nagpur has been identified as one among the best cities in India in terms of liveability, greenery, public transport, and health care etc. It is also famously known as the “Orange City” as it is a major trade centre of oranges cultivated in the region.

The project was inaugurated by Hon’ble Mayor of NMC PravinDatke, who believes that success of the project will improve the quality of life of urban poor and other communities and groups like women, children and differently-abled persons. Other dignitaries present on the occasion include Municipal Commissioner ShravanHardikar, Additional Municipal Commissioner NayanaGunde, Deputy Commissioner JayantDandegaokar, Chief Engineer UlhasDebadwar, Director General of AIILSG Captain AnantModi, Senior Executive Director (AIILSG) Ravi Ranjan Guru, Technical Director (AIILSG) PashimTewariand others.

    European Union (EU)

The EU remains focused on making its governing institutions more transparent and democratic.

    All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG)

    AIILSG is a premier institute working towards

    strengthening and reinforcing Urban Local Governance. For nearly nine decades it has contributed to the principles and practice of urban governance, education, research and capacity building. In all that AIILSG has done, it has taken care to work with a full range of stakeholders – grassroots organizations, NGOs, ULBs, state and national governments, international organizations, organizations of the UN, research organizations and universities. Among international agencies, it has been working closely with World Bank, UNICEF, UNDP, UN-HABITAT, USAID, UNESCO, DFID, GIZ and others in carrying out various training and developmental programmes for enhanced urban development and management.

    Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC)

    NMC came into existence in March 1951

    with key obectives to provide its citizens basic urban services such as water supply, sewerage, construction & maintenance of roads, street lighting, primary health and education facities, etc. NMC also co-ordinates with various organizations like NIT, MHADA, MSRTC, the Traffic Police, MPCB, etc. for delivering the basic urban services.

    Citizen consumer and civic Action Group (CAG)

    CAG is a non-profit, non-political

    and professional organisation that works towards protecting citizens rights in consumer and environmental issues and promoting good governance processes including transparency, accountability and participatory decision-making.

    CITYNET

    CITYNET was created in response to

    the needs of growing cities in the Asia- Pacific region with its mission to promote cooperative links and partnerships throughout the Asia in order to improve the sustainability of our cities.

    United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG)

    UCLG is a worldwide association of

    local government organisations that dates back to 1913. UCLG is the only local government organization recognised by the United Nations, and nominates 10 out of 20 members of UNACLA, the first advisory body of local authorities affiliated with the UN.

    Cities Network Campaign (CNC)

    CNC, a UN listed NGO, is global initiative that

    connects cities, organizations, sector experts from across the world to share best practices, policies, research, etc. It is also an Associate Partner/Programme/Event partner of World Urban Campaign , and many renowned organizations such as WWF India, IWP, CEE, UCLG-ASPAC, etc.
